Founded in the year 2000 the team consisted of about 20 enthusiastic students mainly from the faculties of Aerospace Engineering and Mechanical Engineering from the Delft University of Technology. Within the first 8 months the team managed to acquire funding, organise the team and design and manufacture a fairly standard Formula Student (FS) car, dubbed the DUT01. The car was completed just in time to enter in the 2001 Formula Student Competition in Birmingham, England. The concept consisted of a carbon-fibre/steel space frame chassis and a 4-cylinder engine; the car weighed about 300kg.
However, as the car was only completed one day before the trip, the car did not have the required testing programme and so could not compete in the dynamic events. During this academic year no SE methods were implemented into the project and only a basic Computer Aided Design (CAD) package was used. Despite these major set backs the team went on to win the ‘Rookie Runner-Up Award’, an award recognising the achievements of a team entering its first FS event.
