The DUT 11 is the first electric car of the DUT Racing team after 10 successful years of combustion powered cars. Being the first electric car, the technical design of the powertrain is focussed on the complete package instead of trying to design the ultimate motor or electronic differential. A top level simulation to determine the main characteristics of the car -power, energy and weight- forms the foundation of the car’s design. Also the chassis, suspension and electronics have been redesigned with the new concept in mind. The result is a car that is once again lighter than its competitors and keen to prove that it can compete with the best electric teams out there! After two weeks of testing, the DUT11 found itself in the pouring rain at the start of the acceleration track on the National Pits Straight of Silverstone. To set the quickest time on the first run and to improve it on the second showed the first glimpse of how easy it is to drive the car and adapt to changing conditions. Subsequent quickest times on Skid-Pad and Autocross and first place at both the Design event and Sustainability set high expectations for the Endurance final. Fortunately, the strategy to race with less power in order to save energy paid off and the DUT11 extended her lead to become Formula Student Champion 2011! Two subsequent weeks of testing were used to improve reliability and performance of the car and a new steering wheel gave the driver more control over the power and balance of the car. The performance increase resulted in the fastest acceleration time in DUT Racing history while the reliability of the car was unquestionable after winning the wettest Endurance that Hockenheim has seen until now. Winning Overall Dynamics combined with an equally great performance of the team throughout the statics event yielded another overall victory: Formula Student Electric Champion 2011! In short, the DUT11 has been an unprecedented success and provides a solid foundation to continue to build upon in upcoming years!
