DUT02

October 6th, 2009

For the 2002 competition the team, now at around 40 students, continued developing the concept from 2001 aiming to reduce the overall weight of the car using a variety of methods. One of which was to develop the use of composite materials such as carbon-fibre for suspension and powertrain parts.

However, due to the complexity of the design and major problems during assembly the car again lacked valuable testing time and eventually weighed 280kg, far above the target set by the team. During the academic year more effort was put into the use of new production techniques, without investing the same resources into the adaptation of the Systems Engineering approach. The team came in 16th overall, a rewarding outcome after the problems faced during production.
