Formula Student Germany Thursday: Learning to deal with ups-and-downs

August 2nd, 2012

Thursday, August 2nd was a day filled with good and bad moments. Scrutineering did not go as planned. However, we received a lot of positive feedback during the static events. Below is a report of the day:

We continued with scrutineering so that we can be ready as soon as possible for the dynamic events. We started the day with E-scrutineering and then we went straight on to the technical scrutineering. The weight of the vehicle was determined to be 149 kg, the lightest car at the competition! Then we participated in the tilt table test and rain test. Unfortunately we failed the rain test, but tomorrow we will try again.

The judges of e-scrutineering decided, due to some doubts, to withdraw the e-scrutineering sticker from us. Tonight we will be making the necessary changes, and tomorrow morning we will try to get the E-scrutineering sticker back.

Shortly after lunch we had our first static event: Cost. This was done by Robert (Technical Manager) who made the Cost report and Reinier who made the real cost case. Cost is about the processes and costs associated with the production of your car. We have received positive feedback and we are awaiting results, we feel confident it went a lot better than in the UK.

Immediately after the cost event, it was time for Design judging. During the Design judging the team must convince the judges why our design is the best of the competition. It went very well and we hope to have a shot at the finals.

After the Design judging it was time for the business presentation. At the Business presentation the challenge is to get your car on the market in a profitable way. We thought it went very well, but unfortunately the competition was too strong and we are fourth place, only just being excluded from the finals.

We conclude with a point of great pride. We are nominated for two prestigious awards: the Bosch “Best Power System Award” and the “Best E-Drive Packaging Award” from Daimler. Tomorrow will be a race against the clock to complete scrutineering and compete in the skidpad event.
