Formula Student United Kingdom Saterday: We won Design Judging!

July 15th, 2012

Saturday was the day that everyone had to perform, we were out of time and there was no margin for error anymore. We still had to do brake test in the morning and while one was preparing the car the other was watching the rows and making a strategy to finish all dynamic events.

In the morning we had to repair the car, because yesterday we had problems with our ECU (electronic control unit). The fix seemed to take forever, minutes, hours, and then there was a row of one and a half hour for the brake test!

We were out of luck , fortunately once it was our turn at brake test there were no more problems anymore. We directly went to acceleration, Bastiaan our driver had never driven the car, but he has talent. We are second in acceleration with a time of 4.4 seconds just behind ETH Zurich our main competitor.

Then directly to skidpad where Bastiaan showed again what he could, he set a good time of 6,098 seconds. This brings us at a shared fifth place on skidpad, after a short break and some minor adjustment, we directly went to sprint.

At Sprint our driver Erik van den Berg had a hard time, the car behaved very unpredictable and could eventually set a time of 49.5 seconds. Then it was Tims turn he had a better brake balance and set a time of 48.2, but during this round a marshall was on the track. The competition gave us a dilemma, keep this good time or a new attempt and lose the 48.2. We chose a new attempt, but the tires cooled down and Tim set a time of 49.0 seconds which makes us nineth at the sprint.

Then we were told that we were in the Design Judging finals. We ran towards it and we won!

Then it was time for the first award ceremony, here we won the Jaguar innovation award and Mercedes AMG high voltage powertrain Implementation award. Although these awards do not count for the competition, it’s great to get recognition of such large companies.

We do of course want to win and we are currently third in the overall standings. Tomorrow we will have to bring it all we can certainly still do it!
